Start here
- Choose Tabula when you want to select a table and review a CSV.
- Consider Docling when documents need to pass through a repeatable processing pipeline.
- Use the same sample files to compare correction effort.
When Tabula is the wrong starting point
If a scanned page produces no useful table, first check whether the PDF contains selectable text. Tabula explicitly targets text-based PDFs. For a scan, evaluate an OCR step or an OCR-capable document pipeline such as Docling. For an ordinary digital table, selecting a better region in Tabula may be less work than changing tools. Use the same difficult rows in both trials and compare the actual values.
What each tool is for
Tabula is a desktop extraction utility for text-based PDFs. You select a table region and review an export. Docling is a developer-oriented document processing project with layout, OCR, table handling, and structured document output. A CSV extraction and a document representation are different outputs; choose the one your next step can use.
| Your job | Start by evaluating |
|---|---|
| A few text-based tables, reviewed by a person | Tabula |
| A scheduled document-processing application | Docling |
| Image-only scans | An OCR stage, then table extraction |
| Strict accuracy for supplier prices | Either route, with explicit row checks |
Run a comparison that reveals repair work
Choose an ordinary page, a page with merged headers, and a table continued onto another page. Keep a small manually checked result for comparison. Record incorrect values, missing rows, duplicate headers, and time spent repairing the output. Do not measure only whether each tool produced a file.
A scan changes the setup
Tabula’s documentation says it works with text-based PDFs rather than scans. For an image-only page, add OCR before evaluating that route. Docling documents OCR support, but you still need the appropriate configuration and dependencies. Searchable text does not automatically produce correct column boundaries.
Think about the person maintaining it
A desktop process can be reasonable for a monthly file that takes ten minutes to review. A pipeline becomes more attractive when documents arrive repeatedly and downstream systems expect the same schema. It also creates work: software updates, parser configuration, failures, and a queue for uncertain rows.
Choose on correction cost
Keep your sample and rerun it when either the supplier layout or extraction setup changes. If one tool handles the normal page well and fails on the continuation, document that boundary. A small verified export is a better basis for a decision than an unsupported claim that one parser is more accurate for every PDF.
