Start here
- Pick account import for owned synced notebooks, or file import for local exports.
- Install the official Obsidian Importer in a test vault.
- Review one section before moving the remaining notebooks.
Two supported routes
Obsidian documents account import for notebooks synced to OneDrive and file import for .one or .onepkg files. Account import requires connectivity and appropriate access; file import works without signing in. The export formats are available in the Microsoft 365 OneNote desktop app for Windows, not the Mac app.
| Your source | Route |
|---|---|
| Owned notebook synced to OneDrive | Microsoft account import |
| Windows notebook package | Microsoft OneNote (.one, .onepkg) |
| Notebook shared by another owner | Check access and export options first |
Import a synced notebook
In Obsidian, install and enable Importer under Community plugins. Choose Microsoft OneNote, sign in, and select a small section. Review the template preview before importing. Organization accounts can need administrator approval; do not assume a successful sign-in makes every notebook accessible.
Import exported files
In OneNote for Windows, export a notebook as a OneNote Package. In Importer, select the OneNote file format and choose the export. Review the discovered sections and output settings before starting. Keep the original package outside the vault so a later conversion can begin from the same untouched input.
Review a representative section
Choose a page with typed text, an attachment, a table, and any handwritten or positioned content you depend on. Compare the page hierarchy and open the attachment. Markdown is a different representation from OneNote’s canvas; decide which visual arrangements need a preserved PDF reference.
Troubleshoot a missing notebook
For account imports, check ownership, sync status, and whether the notebook appears in OneNote Web. Follow the official troubleshooting page for account-specific failures. Repeat a small section in a fresh location before importing into the same folder again, and keep a list of items requiring manual repair.
