Missing attachments after an Evernote import? Check these first

Work out whether a missing image or PDF was absent from the export, skipped during conversion, or lost when the vault was moved.

Start here

  1. Check the same note in Evernote and in the untouched export.
  2. Find the imported attachment on disk and inspect the note’s link.
  3. Repeat one small import into a fresh folder before changing the whole archive.

Start with one named attachment

Choose a note with a specific missing PDF or image. Open it in Evernote and confirm the attachment is available there. Export that note separately. Keep this diagnostic export apart from your full archive so you can repeat a small test without creating thousands of duplicates.

Separate missing files from broken links

Search the imported vault’s attachment directory for the expected file. If it exists, open the Markdown note as text and inspect the referenced path. A file moved after import can leave an old path behind; capitalization and renamed folders can also matter when moving between systems. If the file is absent, investigate the export and converter rather than changing the note’s display settings.

Review the converter settings

Yarle exposes settings that affect resource output and which notes are included. Review the configuration for the installed version, especially text-only conversion or skipped content. Its older wiki and current README differ, so do not paste an old configuration without checking it. For Obsidian Importer, use the current documented ENEX route and capture any reported errors.

Repeat the import in a fresh location

Use the small export from the first step. Keep the note and any generated resources together, then open the result before applying sync rules or reorganizing folders. If the attachment works in that isolated import, compare its path and settings with the full migration. This is faster to investigate than rerunning every notebook.

Keep a short repair log

Record the original note title, attachment filename, converter version, and result. Distinguish a missing file from an unsupported preview: a file that opens externally may simply not render inside the note view. Keep unresolved notes in a separate list and retain the ENEX exports until they are resolved.
